چکیده

Effects of Ex Vivo SkinMicrobiopsy onHistopathologic Diagnosis inMelanocytic Skin Lesions Currently, histopathologicanalysis represents thepractical reference standard for the diagnosis of melanocytic skin lesions. However, thereare limitationsparticularly related to the morphologic nature of thehistopathologic interpretation and the influenceof theclinical informationon the finaldiagnosis.1 Toprovide lesional tissue frommelanocytic proliferations for molecular analysiswithout jeopardizing the conventional histopathologicdiagnosis,we inventedaminiaturizedbiopsydevicewith a totalwidthof 0.35mm, containing a sample chamber 0.15 mmwide. This device penetrates approximately 250 μm in healthy skin (ie, superficial dermis) to collect approximately 1600 cells.2 Thismicrobiopsydevice canbeusedwithout local anesthetic, and there is noneed for a suture. Our hypothesis is that the minimal skin damage caused by the microbiopsy does not interfere with the subsequent histopathologic diagnosis.

Differential diagnosis of nonmelanoma pigmented skin lesions based on harmonic generation microscopy.

In vivo harmonic generation microscopy (HGM) has been applied successfully in healthy human skin and can achieve a submicron resolution, similar to histopathologic examination, even at a penetration depth up to 270 μm. This study aims to investigate the clinical applicability of HGM imaging for differential diagnosis of nonmelanoma pigmented skin lesions. A total of 42 pigmented skin tumors, in...

Ex vivo dermoscopy of melanocytic tumors: time for dermatopathologists to learn dermoscopy.

BACKGROUND We have identified cases of skin cancer with discordances between clinical, dermoscopic, and histopathologic findings that were likely due to sampling errors in the pathology laboratory. This has prompted us to explore the use of ex vivo dermoscopy as an ancillary method of gross pathology, which may serve to guide tissue sectioning. Noncontact polarized dermoscopy was applied to pig...

Expression of cyclooxygenase-2 in melanocytic skin lesions by immunohistochemistry

Introduction: cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is involved in pathogenesis of various tumors and possibly malignant skin tumors including malignant melanoma; however, there is not enough information about COX-2 expression in benign melanocytic lesions. In the present study we compared the expression levels of COX-2 in malignant melanoma and benign melanocytic lesions. Method: In this analytical study, ...

Retrospective study of the non-Melanocytic skin cancers in Imam Khomeini Hospital of Ahwaz, 1994-98

Background: Non-melanocytic skin cancers (NMSC) including basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are mostly induced by long life sun ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Although many etiological factors are known in skin cancer, the role of sunlight is the most prominent. Khuzestan is one of the southern provinces of Iran, which has sunny sky and long summer. So it is presumed th...

Nevomelanocytic atypia detection by in vivo reflectance confocal microscopy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a promising novel technology for non-invasive early diagnostics of cutaneous melanoma. However, the possibility to detect melanocytic atypia in nevi by means of in vivo RCM remains unknown. The aim of the study was to evaluate the significance of in vivo RCM features of melanocytic atypia for the diagnosis of melanocytic ...
